7 Care Tips for Older Rabbits

Older rabbit care tips

Rabbits can live for 12 years and longer with the right care and exercise. When rabbits reach their elder years, from around 8 years and older, signs of aging may begin to become more noticeable. You may begin to notice that your energetic ball of fluff enjoys more naps during the day or that they seem to be a little stiff when moving. So here are a few tips on how to care for your aging rabbits.

  1. Stiffness in the joints could be a sign of arthritis. You can help by visiting the vet for a diagnosis. The vet might be able to offer medication to help with the pain and to ease the inflation.
  2. Make it easier for your rabbit to get around. Add extra steps so your bunny is able to reach different levels with ease.
  3. Add plenty of hay in the hutch to provide traction to help with movement and so your rabbit can find comfort when it’s time for a sleep.
  4. If your rabbit lives in the house, or spends time in the home for exercise and grooming, put rugs down on the floorboards and tiles so your rabbit can move around the area without slipping or struggling to get traction.
  5. Use a rabbit hutch cover or a piece of carpet over the hutch, ensuring there is enough ventilation, to prevent draughts.
  6. Visit the vet if you’re worried about weight loss in your rabbit. You might need to adjust the food and supplements or the weight loss could indicate health or tooth problems. It’s also important to be aware of obesity problems in rabbits, speak to your vet to find out more if you’re concerned.
  7. Take your rabbit to the vet for a check-up regularly, especially once they reach the age of 6, so any issues can be spotted early.
