Three Everyday Herbs Rabbits Love to Eat

Rabbit friendly Herbs

Rabbits enjoy a mixed diet and there are several herbs that they simply adore. Adding a few extra herby treats into your rabbit’s diet is a great idea as they have benefits of their own and rabbits will enjoy the taste variations. However, it’s important not to feed your rabbit too much. Add a few varieties slowly and make sure you continue to make hay the primary food. Hay is full of fibre, it helps to prevent disease, constipation and maintains a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut. The herbs should be seen as an additional boost of goodness, but which ones are worth feeding?

The good news is there are an abundance of healthy herbs that your rabbit can enjoy; here are three to get you started.

  1. Basil – Basil is the perfect herb for rabbit owners without green fingers to start growing, or you can find it in supermarkets and garden nurseries. Rabbits will enjoy the taste as it’s quite strong and it has a sweet smell they’ll find irresistible.  Pinch off a few leaves, give them a rinse and see what your rabbit thinks. Basil is also beneficial as it helps to combat itchy skin and inflammation.
  2. Parsley – Parsley is another herb that’s easy to find in shops, and it’s available all year round. Rabbits will happily munch down on flat leafed and curled parsley and you can add a small bunch to their daily feed.
  3. Mint – Rabbits love mint as much as we do, it’s fresh, sweet and smells delicious. Mint is useful for managing a healthy digestion and can be easily grown in any garden or pot.  If your rabbit has a problem with loose stools try feeding some mint, but take your rabbit to the vet if you’re concerned.

There are many more options to consider too including:

  • Majoram
  • Peppermint leaves
  • Sorrel
  • Lavender
  • Dill
  • Lemon balm

You can find our selection of rabbit friendly herbs and hay here. Remember not to over feed your rabbit with herbs and hay needs to be available all the time.
