Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

Is the run part fox-proof as well as the coop?

Yes. The run uses the same heavy-duty welded mesh and secure bolt locks as the coop, so your hens are protected during daytime exercise as well as at night. The run is fully enclosed with a covered roof so there are no gaps for predators to exploit from any angle. We still recommend locking your hens inside the coop overnight, as the coop provides the strongest level of security.

How many hens can combo coop and run kits house?

It depends on the size — each product page gives specific flock capacity guidance. The coop determines how many hens can roost and nest comfortably, whilst the run gives them exercise space during the day. We recommend slightly fewer hens than the maximum to keep your flock calm and settled. Happy hens with proper space lay better and stress less.

Can my hens move freely between the coop and run?

Yes. The coop and run connect directly, so your hens can come and go as they please during the day. When it's time to lock up for the night, simply close the connecting door to secure them inside the coop. This gives them the freedom to exercise, forage, and dust-bathe in the run whilst having a safe shelter to retreat to whenever they want.

Does the run have a floor?

No — the base is open so your hens can scratch, forage, and dust-bathe on the natural ground. This is great for their welfare and natural behaviour. If you're concerned about foxes digging underneath, you can place the run on paving slabs or bury mesh around the perimeter for extra security.

Will the combo cope with British weather?

Yes. Both the coop and run are built from pressure-treated timber with galvanised mesh that resists rust. The coop has a raised floor to prevent damp and a sloped weatherproof roof. The run frame is also weather-treated. Everything is designed for permanent outdoor use in UK conditions. We recommend re-treating the timber every couple of years and positioning the combo in a sheltered spot.

Is they easy to clean?

Yes. The coops have a pull-out droppings tray for quick daily cleaning — slide it out, empty, and replace. Large access doors give you full reach inside for weekly deep cleans. The nesting box has external access so you can collect eggs without disturbing the flock. The run is open-bottomed, so moving it to fresh ground periodically keeps things clean underneath.

How difficult is it to put together?

Assembly typically takes one to two hours with two people and basic tools. Both the coop and run arrive with pre-drilled holes and labelled parts, so you're connecting panels rather than building from scratch. A Phillips screwdriver or drill is all you need. Instructions are included, and our support team is available if you get stuck.

Do they have nesting boxes?

Yes. The coop includes enclosed nesting areas with external access for easy egg collection. The hinged lid means you can check for eggs and clean the nesting area without opening the main coop door or disturbing the rest of your flock.

Can I expand the run later?

The combo is designed as a complete unit, but if you need more exercise space in the future you can position a separate run alongside or use a tunnel system to connect additional space. Contact us if you'd like advice on extending your setup — we're happy to help you work out the best option for your garden and flock size.

Is it worth buying the combo rather than a coop and run separately?

The combo is designed as a single unit, so everything fits together perfectly, with no gaps or weak points for predators to exploit. You avoid the hassle of matching a coop to a run and worrying about compatibility. It's the simplest way to give your flock a secure home with exercise space from day one. Every order is backed by our 90-day free returns guarantee, and our customer service team is here to help before, during, and long after your purchase.

It was such a great experience!

I was concerned that it would not be possible for me, an 82yr old lady,no good at DIY. to put it together - but it just needed a Philips screwdriver and it was easy!

Both the hutch and run are fantastic

We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.

Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

Quality product, quality customer service!

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.

They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

A quality product, with quality customer service.

High quality item with high quality service

Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.

The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company

I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.

The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.

The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.

Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service

Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.

Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch

The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.

Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Service and professionalism

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.

A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

I cannot fault the service and professionalism of Home & Roost.
