Do my guinea pigs really need a hutch cover?

Guinea pigs are more sensitive to cold and damp than many owners realise. A hutch cover keeps rain, wind, and frost off the hutch, keeping bedding dry and reducing draughts. It also protects the timber from weather damage, extending the life of your hutch. If your guinea pigs live outdoors, a cover is one of the most worthwhile additions you can make, especially in autumn and winter.
Will the cover fit my hutch?

Our fitted covers are designed for specific Home & Roost hutch models, so they match the dimensions exactly with no gaps for wind or rain to get through. What's the difference between a rain cover and a thermal cover?

A rain cover is a waterproof outer layer that shields your hutch from rain, wind, and frost. A thermal cover is a padded inner layer that helps retain heat inside the hutch during cold weather. For the best winter protection, use both together — the thermal layer underneath and the rain cover on top. Guinea pigs feel the cold quickly, so the combination makes a real difference on bitter nights.
Can I still feed and clean without removing the cover?

Yes. Our covers have roll-up front panels so you can access the hutch doors without taking the whole thing off. Feed, clean, and check on your piggies with the cover still in place — then roll the panel back down when you're done.
Will the cover blow off in strong winds?

The covers fasten with Velcro straps that hold firm in windy conditions. For very exposed locations, make sure all straps are secured tightly. Some customers in particularly windy spots add a brick or weight on top of the roof section for extra security, but most find the Velcro holds well on its own.
Does the clear front panel let my guinea pigs see out?

Yes. The front panel is made from clear waterproof material, so your piggies can still see the world even when the cover is down. It keeps rain out whilst letting light through, so they don't feel shut away during bad weather.
Should I use a cover in summer too?

Yes — a cover is useful year-round. In summer, it provides shade from direct sun, which is important as guinea pigs can overheat quickly. It also protects against sudden rain showers and shields the hutch timber from UV damage. Roll up the front panel for ventilation on warmer days and drop it down when the weather turns.
How long do the covers last?

Most customers get two to three years of regular outdoor use from a cover, depending on how exposed your garden is. The covers are made from durable, water-resistant material designed for British weather. When yours eventually needs replacing, the same model is available to order again.
Can I use a rabbit hutch cover on a guinea pig hutch?

If the hutch model is the same, yes. Many of our hutches are used for both rabbits and guinea pigs, and the covers are designed to fit specific hutch models regardless of which pet lives inside. Just match the cover to your hutch model, and it will fit perfectly.
Do I need to do anything to maintain the cover?

A little care goes a long way. After heavy rain, use a brush to sweep any standing water off the roof section of the cover to prevent pooling and reduce wear. Give it a wipe down occasionally to remove dirt and debris, and check that the Velcro fastenings are still gripping firmly. The covers work hard day after day in all conditions, so keeping on top of these small things will help yours last longer.

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.
