Cosy, happy piggies all year round without cold, draughty housing that lets them down
Thin walls and flimsy construction leave guinea pigs cold and exposed. Our hutches are built properly with thick timber, weather treatment, and a cosy sleeping retreat that keeps them warm
It depends on the size. As a guide, a 4ft hutch suits 2 guinea pigs, a 5ft hutch suits 2-3, and a 6ft hutch comfortably houses 3-4. Guinea pigs are social animals and should always be kept in pairs or groups, so make sure you choose a hutch with enough space for everyone. Welfare guidelines recommend a minimum of 120cm x 60cm for a pair — our range meets or exceeds this across all sizes.
Will my guinea pigs be warm enough in winter?
Yes, with proper care. Our hutches are built from thick timber with draught-free walls and a deep enclosed sleeping area that provides good insulation. For extra winter protection, we recommend adding a fitted hutch cover, positioning the hutch in a sheltered spot, and packing the sleeping area with plenty of hay and straw. On the coldest nights, consider bringing them indoors.
What's the difference between a Double hutch and a 2-Tier hutch?
A Double hutch has two levels connected by a ramp with one sleeping area on the top level — it's designed for bonded guinea pigs who live together. A 2-Tier hutch has two completely separate levels with no ramp, and each level has its own sleeping area. It's essentially two complete hutches stacked together, perfect for keeping unbonded guinea pigs apart.
Can my guinea pigs manage the ramp?
Most guinea pigs learn to use the ramp within a few days. If yours are hesitant, try adding a grip strip — a piece of carpet or rubber matting — for better traction. Some owners also place a small treat halfway up to encourage them. This only applies to Double and Triple hutches; our 2-Tier and 3-Tier hutches have separate levels with no ramp.
Is the hutch fox-proof?
Our hutches feature strong welded mesh and secure bolt locks that provide good protection. However, no hutch is 100% predator-proof. We recommend positioning the hutch away from known fox routes, checking locks regularly, and using a hutch cover at night, which helps conceal your guinea pigs from view. If foxes are particularly active in your area, consider bringing your piggies indoors overnight.
Our Home & Roost hutches easy to clean?
Yes. The large front doors give you full access to the living area so you can reach every corner. We recommend spot-cleaning daily and a full clean once a week with fresh bedding throughout. A floor protector underneath the bedding makes the weekly clean quicker and protects the timber from urine damage.
Will it survive British weather?
Yes. The timber is pressure-treated to resist rain, frost, and UV damage, and the hutch is designed for permanent outdoor use in UK conditions. For extra protection, especially in exposed gardens, we recommend adding a fitted hutch cover and positioning the hutch in a sheltered spot facing away from prevailing wind and rain. Re-treat the wood annually to maintain protection.
How difficult is it to put together?
Assembly typically takes one to two hours with two people and basic tools. A drill speeds things up but a Phillips screwdriver works fine. The panels come pre-assembled so you're connecting sections rather than building from scratch. Instructions are included, and our support team is available if you get stuck.
Can I use a rabbit hutch for guinea pigs?
Yes — many of our customers do. Our rabbit hutches provide generous floor space that guinea pigs love. Guinea pigs tend to use the separate levels as distinct living areas rather than climbing between them. The thick timber and deep sleeping areas work just as well for guinea pigs as they do for rabbits.
Is it worth the extra money compared to pet shop hutches?
It depends on what matters to you. Our hutches use thicker timber, stronger mesh, and better construction than typical pet shop alternatives. They're designed to last for years rather than needing replacement after one winter. If you want proper, welfare-friendly housing that keeps your piggies warm and won't fall apart, it's an investment that pays for itself by not buying twice.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic
We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.
Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.
Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around
Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.
But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.
They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

High quality item with high quality service
Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.
The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them. Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company
I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.
The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.
The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company
Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.
Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service
Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.
Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch
The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.
Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.
A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

Having studied the best hutches on the market we decided to purchase the 6ft Chartwell hutch. Very well made, quality materials, lots of space for both of them and our bunnies seem very settled and safe…
All the products we have purchased are good quality and built to last.. These are built to be good for years to come!
