Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

Is this run actually fox-proof?

Never leave your pets out in a run overnight or unsupervised for a prolonged period of time. We've designed every run with predators in mind. The galvanised mesh is far stronger than thin pet shop wire and resists determined predators.

The roofed design protects from above, and secure bolt locks prevent doors from being opened. No run is 100% guaranteed against every situation, but our design gives you strong protection for daytime outdoor use. We recommend being cautious at dawn and dusk when foxes are most active, and always bringing your guinea pigs inside overnight.

Can guinea pigs escape or chew through it?

The mesh gaps are too small for guinea pigs to squeeze through, and the galvanised wire is far too strong for them to chew. The solid timber frame has no weak points where a determined digger might find a way out. With normal use, escapes aren't something you need to worry about.

Is it safe to leave them in the run without constant supervision?

Our runs are designed for secure daytime use when you're at home. The strong mesh, roofed design, and sturdy frame mean you can get on with other things whilst your piggies enjoy the grass. We always recommend bringing guinea pigs inside overnight and being extra cautious at dawn and dusk when predators are more active. Never leave your pets overnight in a run.

Is it big enough for my guinea pigs?

Our runs come in a range of sizes to suit different numbers of guinea pigs. As a guide, a smaller run suits 2 guinea pigs for exercise time, whilst our larger runs comfortably accommodate groups of 3-4. Check the product page for specific sizing guidance. Remember, a run is for exercise and grazing — your piggies also need a properly sized hutch for living.

Can it stay outside in all weather?

Yes. The timber is treated for outdoor use and the galvanised wire resists rust, so it handles British rain, frost, and sunshine without problems. For folding runs, storing them away during prolonged bad weather will extend their lifespan. We recommend providing shade in hot weather so your piggies have somewhere cool to retreat to.

Will it blow over in the wind?

The solid timber frame is much sturdier than lightweight wire-only runs. In normal conditions, it stays firmly in place. For exposed gardens or particularly windy days, you can secure it with ground pegs or add weight. Most customers find it stable without any extra measures.

Does Home & Roost runs attach to my hutch?

Our Chartwell attaching runs are designed to connect directly to Chartwell hutches, creating a secure corridor with no gaps so your guinea pigs can move freely between hutch and run. No lifting them in and out — they come and go as they please during the day. Check the product page to find the right run for your hutch model, or contact us and we'll help you match them up.

Does the folding run actually fold away easily?

Yes. The folding design folds flat for storage when not in use and takes just a couple of minutes to set up again. Many owners move it around the garden for fresh grass, which the folding design makes easy. Once assembled the first time, unfolding for daily use is quick and straightforward.

How difficult is it to put together?

Assembly is straightforward and typically takes under an hour. Most pieces connect with simple fastenings and no specialist tools are required. Instructions are included, and our support team is available if you get stuck. For folding runs, once assembled the first time, setting up for daily use takes just a minute or two.

Do I need a run cover or shade for the run?

In summer, guinea pigs can overheat quickly in direct sunlight, so providing shade is important. A run shade or cover gives them a cool area to retreat to and also provides shelter from light rain showers. In cooler months, a cover helps keep the run dry and more comfortable during outdoor time. It's not essential but it makes a real difference to how much use your piggies get out of the run throughout the year.

What People Are Saying...

Wonderful product & great company

It was such a great experience!

I was concerned that it would not be possible for me, an 82yr old lady,no good at DIY. to put it together - but it just needed a Philips screwdriver and it was easy!

They were so helpful with advice and instruction and wow - British made - wonderful - superb bird feeder and cheap!

Both the hutch and run are fantastic

We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.

Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

Quality product, quality customer service!

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.

They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

A quality product, with quality customer service.

High quality item with high quality service

Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.

The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company

I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.

The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.

The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.

Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service

Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.

Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch

The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.

Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Service and professionalism

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.

A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

I cannot fault the service and professionalism of Home & Roost.
