Give hedgehogs proper shelter without decorative houses that sit empty

Decorative garden houses look nice, but sit empty because hedgehogs won't use them. Ours are designed around what hedgehogs actually need — safe entrances, dry interiors, and shelter from predators

Predator-proof entrance keeps threats out

A safe place to nest and hibernate

Purpose-built so hedgehogs actually use it

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

Why should I buy a hedgehog house?

Hedgehog houses provide a safe and secure environment for hedgehogs to shelter, nest, and hibernate in. With their natural habitats dwindling, these houses offer much-needed protection from predators and the elements, helping hedgehogs thrive in your garden. If you're looking for a high-quality option, explore our Predator-Proof Hedgehog House.

What should I look for when choosing a hedgehog house?

Key considerations include:

  • Size & Material – Opt for untreated wood or recycled plastic.
  • Entrance Design – A tunnel entrance provides extra protection from predators.
  • Weatherproofing – Ensure a waterproof roof keeps the interior dry.
  • Ventilation & Cleaning – Good airflow and an easy-to-open lid make maintenance simpler.

For a top-rated choice, check out our Camouflage Hedgehog House.

Where is the best place to put a hedgehog house in my garden?

Choose a quiet, shady spot, ideally under some bushes or against a fence/wall. Avoid facing the entrance north or northeast to protect it from cold winter winds. For a detailed setup guide, read How to Create the Perfect Hedgehog Habitat.

What should I put inside the hedgehog house?
  • A layer of dry leaves, straw, or hay provides suitable bedding.
  • Avoid using hay, as it can tangle in their spines.
  • Do not place food inside, as it can attract unwanted visitors.

Need tips on feeding hedgehogs without attracting pests? Read How to Feed Hedgehogs Without Attracting Rats.

How do I maintain a hedgehog house?
  • Clean the house annually with boiling water.
  • Replace bedding to keep it dry and safe.
  • Avoid using harsh chemicals that could harm hedgehogs.
  • Check for damage and repair if needed.
When is the best time to set up a hedgehog house?

You can set up a hedgehog house at any time of year, but autumn is ideal as hedgehogs search for hibernation spots. Learn more about When Hedgehogs Come Out of Hibernation.

Will a hedgehog house attract rats?

While possible, you can reduce the risk by:

  • Placing the house on a raised platform.
  • Keeping it away from food sources.
  • Regularly cleaning the house and surrounding area.

For pest-free feeding tips, read How to Stop Cats Eating Hedgehog Food.

Are hedgehog houses suitable for hedgehog rescue centres?

Yes! Many hedgehog houses, such as the Large Hedgehog Feeding Station and our Cambridge Care Home Stackable Hedgehog Hospital Hutches, are ideal for rescue centres. Look for houses with opening roofs for easy access and inspection.

What are some alternatives to hedgehog houses?
  • Piles of leaves/logs
  • DIY houses from untreated wood
  • Repurposed pet houses

However, purpose-built hedgehog houses offer better protection from predators and harsh weather.

How can I make my garden more hedgehog-friendly?
  • Create a hedgehog highway – Cut a small hole in your fence.
  • Provide food & water – See What to Feed Hedgehogs in Your Garden.
  • Avoid pesticides – These can harm hedgehogs.
  • Encourage natural shelter – Build log piles, compost heaps, or wildflower patches.

What People Are Saying...

Wonderful product & great company

It was such a great experience!

I was concerned that it would not be possible for me, an 82yr old lady,no good at DIY. to put it together - but it just needed a Philips screwdriver and it was easy!

They were so helpful with advice and instruction and wow - British made - wonderful - superb bird feeder and cheap!

Both the hutch and run are fantastic

We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.

Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

Quality product, quality customer service!

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.

They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

A quality product, with quality customer service.

High quality item with high quality service

Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.

The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company

I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.

The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.

The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.

Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service

Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.

Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch

The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.

Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Service and professionalism

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.

A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

I cannot fault the service and professionalism of Home & Roost.

Having studied the best hutches on the market we decided to purchase the 6ft Chartwell hutch. Very well made, quality materials, lots of space for both of them and our bunnies seem very settled and safe…

All the products we have purchased are good quality and built to last.. These are built to be good for years to come!
