The Made in Britain mark doesn’t just mean that our products are put together inside our borders. Rather, it means that our business is run according to the labour and manufacturing standards of the Made in Britain organization. It also means quite a bit to us, personally.

Why Made in Britain?

There was a time when almost everything people used was made locally. As human societies grew and spread, trade between societies naturally developed. Over time, it became easier to import and export goods. And soon, people everywhere were able to enjoy the bounty from far-flung corners of the world.

But large-scale global trade has had some unintended consequences.

Many factors make it cheaper to manufacture goods abroad, including:

  • Lower local wages
  • Lax environmental regulations
  • Fewer labour protections
  • Favourable tax conditions

Over time, many manufacturers moved their production facilities out of Britain. The short term result has been cheaper goods for consumers and more profits for manufacturers.

At the same time, the jobs that these companies created have left Britain, and they haven’t come back.

And then there’s the human and environmental toll of manufacturing in places with lower protective standards. These measures make it cheaper for businesses to operate, but the host country pays the price in terms of pollution, wage depression, and inadequate worker protections.

To say nothing of a company’s loss of control over the quality of its products.

When you buy a product with the Made in Britain mark, you’re buying something that was manufactured in Britain using British labour. Your purchase supports local families and communities, as well as the British economy.

You also know you can contact us directly in the event of a problem.

And that’s something to be proud of.

What We Do

Home & Roost has been manufacturing and supplying pet products in the UK for the past 40 years. We’re a family-run company, and we’re proud to provide jobs to our local community.

Home & Roost is also international. We’re the only pet house provider that exports products to both mainland Europe and the United States. In fact, we’re the number one provider of rabbit hutches in all of Europe.

We’re also an ethical company, with accreditation from the Ethical Company Organization

What does that mean?

The Ethical Company Organization is the UK’s only cross-spectrum ethical accrediting body. The ECO rates companies based on their adherence to high standards of corporate behaviour toward people, animals, and the environment.

Only the top 33% of applicants receive accreditation, and all companies must reapply every twelve months. Home & Roost is very proud to be an accredited Ethical Company since 2017.

All of this has translated into demonstrable customer satisfaction. For just one example, Home & Roost has a 4.7 out of five-star rating on Trustpilot.

What Made in Britain Means to Us

Of course, we’re proud to be building the British economy and supporting our local communities. But Made in Britain means more than that.

Manufacturing locally means that we have complete control over the quality of our products. We’re not just a middleman distributing cheap items produced abroad. We make everything ourselves, right here in Britain, employing people from our local community.

This means we have absolute control over design, materials, and manufacture. If there’s a defect with one of our products, that product won’t ship.

And if a different problem arises, you can contact us directly, and we’ll sort it out.

The Made in Britain Campaign

The Made in Britain Campaign aims to support and promote the best of British business. Businesses that make the cut earn the right to display the Made in Britain registered mark on qualifying products. This mark tells you that our business:

  • Scores in the top 33% for all criteria
  • Makes our finished products in Britain, using British labour
  • Provides an environment that rewards competent workers
  • Adheres to all relevant health and safety regulations
  • Complies with all local product safety regulations
  • Adheres to government anti-slavery, anti-child labour, and anti-bribery/corruption regulations
  • Follows the Made in Britain code of conduct

Home & Roost is proud to be one of a community of Made in Britain companies using our spirit of innovation to grow and support the British economy.

Buy the Best of British
