Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

What accessories do I actually need when I start keeping chickens?

At a minimum, your hens need a feeder, a drinker, and bedding for the coop. A wood treatment is also worth having early on to maintain your coop's weatherproofing. Beyond that, cleaning tools and a disinfectant keep things hygienic, and enrichment like a chicken swing helps prevent boredom and pecking. If you're unsure where to start, contact us and we'll help you put together the right setup for your flock.

What bedding should I use in the coop?

Wood shavings are the most popular choice — they're absorbent, easy to clean out, and help control odour. Straw works well in nesting boxes for egg laying. Avoid hay as it holds moisture and can go mouldy quickly. Whichever bedding you use, replace it fully once a week and spot-clean daily to keep things fresh and reduce the risk of disease.

How often should I clean the coop?

Remove droppings and soiled bedding daily — a pull-out tray makes this quick. Do a full clean once a week, replacing all bedding and wiping down surfaces. A deeper clean with a pet-safe disinfectant once a month helps prevent parasites and bacteria building up. Regular cleaning is the single most important thing you can do for your flock's health.

How often should I re-treat the coop wood?

We recommend applying a pet-safe wood treatment every one to two years, or sooner if the timber is looking weathered or dry. Early autumn is a good time to do it before winter sets in. It takes about 30 minutes for a standard coop and makes a real difference to how long the timber lasts against rain, frost, and UV damage.

Is the wood treatment safe for chickens?

Yes. We only stock pet-safe, water-based wood treatments that are free from harmful chemicals. Let the treatment dry fully before allowing your hens back into the coop — usually a few hours on a dry day. Once dried, it poses no risk to your chickens.

What type of feeder is best?

A covered feeder helps keep food dry and clean, reducing waste and preventing contamination from droppings or rain. For a small flock, a hanging feeder works well as it keeps food off the ground and away from vermin. Whichever type you choose, check it daily and clean it out regularly to keep food fresh and your hens healthy.

Do chickens really need enrichment?

Yes — bored chickens can become stressed, which leads to feather pecking and aggression within the flock. Simple enrichment like a chicken swing, pecking block, or scattered treats gives them something to do and encourages natural foraging behaviour. A busy hen is a happy hen, and happy hens lay better.

How do I stop rats being attracted to the coop?

The biggest attractant is food left out overnight. Use a feeder that closes at dusk or bring the feeder inside each evening. Store feed in a sealed container, not an open bag. Keep the area around the coop clean and tidy, and remove any spilt food promptly. Good hygiene and sensible feeding routines make a big difference.

Do you sell replacement parts for coops?

Yes. We stock replacement parts for all our coops, including panels, doors, hinges, locks, mesh, and roof felt. Even years after your original purchase, we can supply what you need. Contact us with your coop model and we'll get the right part to you, usually within one to two working days.

Can I use these accessories with a coop from another brand?

Most of our accessories — feeders, drinkers, bedding, cleaning tools, wood treatments, and enrichment — work with any chicken coop regardless of brand. The only products specific to our coops are fitted covers and replacement parts. Everything else is universal, so you can use them with whatever coop you have.

What People Are Saying...

Wonderful product & great company

It was such a great experience!

I was concerned that it would not be possible for me, an 82yr old lady,no good at DIY. to put it together - but it just needed a Philips screwdriver and it was easy!

They were so helpful with advice and instruction and wow - British made - wonderful - superb bird feeder and cheap!

Both the hutch and run are fantastic

We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.

Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

Quality product, quality customer service!

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.

They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

A quality product, with quality customer service.

High quality item with high quality service

Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.

The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company

I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.

The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.

The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.

Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service

Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.

Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch

The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.

Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Service and professionalism

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.

A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

I cannot fault the service and professionalism of Home & Roost.
