In 2021 our amazing customers have once again helped us to raise over £2000 for animal welfare charities over the Black Friday weekend. It’s a great total, especially in a year that has been so hard for so many people. The money will be divided equally between six animal welfare charities, chosen by our customers.
We have been working with cats and cat lovers for quite a few years now, so it’s no surprise that there was support for a whole range of cat welfare charities including the RSPCA, several local branches of Cats Protection and Berkshire Animal hospital.
The cat welfare charity that gained the most votes, and will receive this year’s donation is Rescue Me Animal Sanctuary in Liverpool and this week we’d like to share a little about the work they are doing, and how our donation will help.
Rescue Me Animal Sanctuary
Rescue Me are based in Liverpool and were set up by Steph Taylor in 2013. The focus of their work is dogs and cats but Rescue me will try to help any animal in need.
When a cat for rehoming comes to Rescue Me it will be assessed and treated on-site before being placed with one of their network of 60 cat fosterers whilst waiting for a forever home. In this way, they have been able to rehome an amazing 350 cats this year so far.
And the great work doesn’t stop there. In 2018 with the help of fundraising and donations they were able to buy a new site at Bells Farm in Melling. Though the site needed a lot of work it had the potential to provide facilities for helping far more animals.
During the pandemic Rescue Me struggled to get vet appointments for the animals they were helping. So one of the first things to be built on the new site was a dedicated vets room. This now allows them to offer neutering, vaccinations and microchipping on-site.
They work in partnership with Cats Protection doing essential work with stray, feral and community cats in the area including being part of the TNR programme.
For 2022 Rescue me would like to expand their vet’s room to allow them to offer a wider range of procedures on-site, like x-rays. They would also like to build a kennel block to allow them to take in more dogs.
Although the majority of cats that come to Rescue Me go on to new loving owners, some special cats find their furever home at the charity.
Frog, Newt and David are all cats born with just two legs. Amazingly, they seem to get around just fine on just two legs, and as you can see in the video, have a happy and healthy life at Rescue Me HQ. In fact, they have become feline celebrities and even have their own Facebook page - what cat wouldn’t want that!
Rescue Me is a well established and well-supported charity with ambitious plans to help as many animals as possible. Although they have a small paid team the vast majority of their work is still carried out by volunteers and funded by donations. The money you have helped to raise for Rescue Me will help them achieve their long-term goals and meet monthly running costs.
So a big thank you from all of us here at Home and Roost to the team at Rescue Me for all the work you are doing. We look forward to keeping in touch during 2022 and finding out more about your work.
