Care Tips for Outdoor Loving Dogs

There are plenty of dogs who love to be outside, especially if you spend a lot of your time outdoors too. Providing a suitable space is a must as dogs need to be protected from the elements just like we do.

As a dog owner, you have a legal duty to ensure your dog is well looked after, meeting all of their welfare needs. While we don’t recommend that you keep dogs outside permanently, it is a good idea to provide them with outside shelter for periods of play, rest or for times when you’d like your dog to not be inside the home. The RSPCA recommends that:

  • When outside your dog needs enough space to be able to stretch out, lie down, sit up, stand, walk, run and wag their tail.
  • Fresh water must always be available.
  • Dogs that are left outside must be able to find cover from rain, wind and have shaded areas to protect them from direct sunlight. Dog kennels are ideal as they provide comfortable shelter in all weather conditions, unlike crates that are not suitable for outside use.
  • If your dog is going to be spending a lot of time in the kennel it is important to pay attention to the internal temperature. You may need to add cooling or heating options and make sure the temperature remains below 26 degrees Celsius and 10 degrees Celsius. Any heating or ventilation systems have to be safe and suitable.
  • Dogs are only tied up for very short periods to allow them to perform natural behaviours and to avoid injury.
  • Position the kennel in a suitable area in your outdoor space, make sure it is shaded.

Our sturdy kennels come in different sizes, if you’re unsure of the right one for your dog please give us a call or use our online messaging service if we’re online. If you visit us during a period when online chat is not available just leave us a message and we’ll get back to you.

Outdoor-loving dogs need a safe and comfortable space when enjoying time outside. It’s essential to provide shelter that protects them from the elements, such as a kennel, and ensures they have enough room to move freely. Always have fresh water available and monitor the temperature inside the kennel, keeping it between 10 and 26 degrees Celsius. Remember, while outdoor time is great, it’s crucial to balance it with indoor companionship and care.
