Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

Can I leave my rabbits in the run unsupervised?

No. Runs and tunnels are designed for supervised daytime exercise only. No run can protect rabbits from a determined predator — if a fox sees a rabbit in a run, it won't stop until it gets in. Never leave your rabbit unattended for extended periods, and always bring them back into their hutch before dark. The hutch is where your rabbits are truly secure.

How does the tunnel system work?

The Burrow Portal fits into your hutch or run, creating a secure opening for a tunnel to connect the two. Your rabbits can then move freely between their hutch and run during supervised time. The portal includes a closable door so you can secure them back in their hutch whenever you need to. The system is fully modular — you can add extra lengths, corners, and additional runs over time.

Will a tunnel fit my existing hutch?

If your hutch has a Burrow Portal already fitted, the tunnel connects directly. For existing hutches without a portal, the Burrow Portal Install Kit includes everything you need to add one — most owners have it fitted in around 30 minutes with basic tools. If you're unsure about compatibility, contact us and we'll help you work out the best setup.

Does the run have a floor?

No — the base is open so your rabbits can enjoy the natural ground underneath. This lets them dig, graze on fresh grass, and interact with the earth, which is great for enrichment. Move the run to fresh grass periodically for a clean grazing area. The run works fine on hard surfaces like decking or paving too.

Can I connect multiple runs together?

Yes. Using the Burrow Portal and tunnel system, you can link multiple rabbit runs to create a larger network. Because tunnel-connected runs don't need to match each other in size, you have plenty of flexibility with how you lay things out. Many owners start with one run and expand over time.

Will my rabbits chew through the tunnel?

The tunnel is made from chew-resistant materials that most rabbits leave alone. The smooth surfaces and generous diameter reduce chewing triggers. No material is completely chew-proof, so keep an eye on determined chewers initially — but most owners report no issues at all.

Will the runs and tunnels survive British weather?

Yes. The run frames are built from treated timber with galvanised mesh that resists rust, and the tunnels are UV-stabilised and weather-resistant. Both are designed for year-round outdoor use in UK conditions. We recommend re-treating the timber annually and giving tunnels an occasional wipe-down to keep everything in good shape.

Can I close the tunnel off at night?

Yes — and you should. The Burrow Portal includes a closable door that slides shut. At night, close the portal and lock your rabbits in their hutch with a deep sleeping area. This is essential for their safety. Open it again in the morning for supervised daytime exercise.

Can I use a run for guinea pigs?

Yes. Our runs work well for guinea pigs — they love the outdoor floor space for grazing and exploring. The open base lets them nibble fresh grass, and the enclosed roof keeps them safely contained. Just supervise outdoor time the same way you would with rabbits, and always bring them back into their hutch when you're done.

How long does assembly take?

Most runs can be assembled in under an hour with two people. They arrive with pre-drilled holes and labelled parts, so you're connecting panels rather than building from scratch. Fitting a Burrow Portal and tunnel typically takes around 30 minutes on top of that. A Phillips screwdriver or drill is all you need for both.

What People Are Saying...

Wonderful product & great company

It was such a great experience!

I was concerned that it would not be possible for me, an 82yr old lady,no good at DIY. to put it together - but it just needed a Philips screwdriver and it was easy!

They were so helpful with advice and instruction and wow - British made - wonderful - superb bird feeder and cheap!

Both the hutch and run are fantastic

We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.

Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

Quality product, quality customer service!

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.

They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

A quality product, with quality customer service.

High quality item with high quality service

Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.

The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company

I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.

The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.

The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.

Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service

Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.

Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch

The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.

Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Service and professionalism

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.

A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

I cannot fault the service and professionalism of Home & Roost.
