Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

What's the difference between a tortoise table, an outdoor run and a vivarium?

They're three different setups for three different jobs. A tortoise table is the indoor base — an open-topped enclosure with ventilation, ideal for Mediterranean species, juveniles and cold months. An outdoor run is a spring-and-summer add-on for natural sunshine and grazing, used under supervision. A vivarium is a fully enclosed indoor habitat, more common for tropical reptiles and generally not recommended for Mediterranean tortoises (which prefer the airier table). Most UK keepers use a tortoise table indoors and an outdoor run for warm days.

Does my tortoise need both indoor and outdoor housing?

In the UK, almost always yes. The tortoise table indoors is the year-round base — secure, climate-controlled, where they eat, sleep and shelter from cold and wet. The outdoor run is a spring–summer extra that gives them real sunshine, room to roam and natural grazing on safe garden plants. Juveniles especially benefit from indoor stability; healthy adults benefit from outdoor time on warm dry days.

Can my tortoise live outdoors year-round in the UK?

No. UK winters are too cold and wet for Mediterranean species (Hermann's, Horsfield, Spur-thighed, Marginated) to live outside, and even in summer they need to come in at night and during bad weather. Outdoor housing is for supervised daytime use in the warmer months, broadly April to September depending on weather and your tortoise's species and health.

What should I feed my tortoise?

Mediterranean tortoises thrive on a diet of weeds and leafy greens — dandelion, plantain, watercress, clover, hibiscus and similar — with a small share of safe vegetables. Avoid lettuce (low value), fruit-heavy diets, dog or cat food, and processed pet food. Our Komodo Tortoise Diet, Hay Cookies and Flower Snack Bars are useful supplements to a varied fresh-greens diet. For species-specific guidance, the Tortoise Trust UK and your exotic vet are excellent references.

Does my tortoise need a UV lamp?

Indoors, yes. UVB light is essential for shell health and Vitamin D3 synthesis — outdoor sunshine provides this naturally, but on cloudy days and through the colder months your indoor setup needs a UV lamp over the basking area. The HabiStat Tortoise Table Accessory Kit includes the lighting and accessories most keepers need to get started, and we'd point you to your vet or the Tortoise Trust if you're unsure what your species needs.

How do I keep my tortoise safe from predators?

The honest answer: no run or enclosure is fully predator-proof — foxes, cats, large birds (corvids and birds of prey can take juveniles) and badgers can all be a threat. The safe approach is supervised outdoor time only, with your tortoise locked away in a secure indoor table or weatherproof house when you're not there. Site the run in an open spot where you can see it from the house, and bring them in before dusk.

Do tortoises hibernate, and how do I look after them in winter?

Most Mediterranean tortoises hibernate (Hermann's, Spur-thighed and Marginated typically do; Horsfield differently; juveniles often shouldn't), but hibernation is a specialist topic and an active veterinary decision based on species, age and health. We'd point you to your exotic vet, the Tortoise Trust or the Tortoise Protection Group for guidance — and never hibernate a tortoise that has been ill, lost weight or isn't fit. Through winter the tortoise table or a controlled hibernation setup is their base; outdoor runs are packed away until spring.

Which size or product suits my tortoise's species?

Sizing scales with the tortoise. The 6ft Folding Canterbury Run suits a juvenile Hermann's or Horsfield for short exercise sessions; the 7.7ft XL gives a near-adult or larger species (Spur-thighed, Marginated) more room. Indoor tortoise tables come in two sizes — pick the larger if you have an adult or a pair. If you're unsure which size or setup is right for your tortoise, drop us a message with the species and shell length.

What other accessories do I need to get started?

A working setup usually needs: the table or vivarium for indoors, a UV/heat lamp and substrate (the HabiStat Accessory Kit covers most of these), a shaded outdoor run for sunny days (with the Day Dry Shade), a hide section the tortoise can retreat into, fresh water, and a varied diet of weeds and greens plus the occasional treat. Keep a Fall Guard fitted to your tortoise table to stop adventurous escape attempts.

Delivery, returns and guarantee?

Our British-made tortoise runs and tables are delivered free to the UK mainland on orders over £100, and accessories ship alongside. You're covered by our 90-day no-quibble returns, with a 2-year guarantee on parts for our handmade products — so you can build your tortoise's setup with complete confidence.

What People Are Saying...

Wonderful product & great company

It was such a great experience!

I was concerned that it would not be possible for me, an 82yr old lady,no good at DIY. to put it together - but it just needed a Philips screwdriver and it was easy!

They were so helpful with advice and instruction and wow - British made - wonderful - superb bird feeder and cheap!

Both the hutch and run are fantastic

We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.

Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.

They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

High quality item with high quality service

Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.

The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company

I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.

The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.

The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.

Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service

Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.

Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch

The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.

Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Service and professionalism

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.

A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

I cannot fault the service and professionalism of Home & Roost.
