Quiet refuge a nervous or feral cat will trust

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

Will a shelter really keep a stray cat warm in winter?

Yes. Each shelter is insulated to trap and hold the cat's own body heat, and sits raised off the cold, wet ground so the chill can't seep up from below. Add a thick layer of straw bedding and even on a frosty night the inside stays noticeably warmer than the air outside — a snug refuge a stray can curl up in and ride out the worst of the weather.

Do these shelters need electricity, or get hot?

No electricity, and no running costs. The warmth is passive: the insulation reflects the cat's body heat back rather than letting it escape, so nothing plugs in, nothing gets hot to the touch, and there's no fire risk — just a naturally warmer, draught-protected space inside.

A stray won't come near me — how do I get it to use the shelter?

Patience is the trick. Put the shelter somewhere the cat already feels safe — a quiet, low-traffic corner with the doorway out of the wind — and line it with straw. Leaving a little food nearby helps (the Verdun Cat Chalet is designed with feeding strays in mind), and don't crowd the cat. A wary stray may circle it for a week or two before deciding to move in.

Is it safe for a nervous or feral cat — won't it feel trapped?

A cat that feels cornered won't settle, which is why this matters. For the most nervous cats, a twin-entrance design like the Herne gives a clear escape route so they always have a way out. With single-door shelters, leave any flap off at first so the entrance stays open and inviting. Sited in a calm spot, most cats soon learn it's a safe place to hide and rest.

Which shelter is best for a stray or feral cat?

It depends on the cat and your setup. The Verdun Cat Chalet is built for year-round use and feeding strays; the Whitstable and Galloway are simple thermal-curtain shelters that wary cats take to easily; and the twin-entrance Herne suits the most nervous. If you're caring for a stray longer-term, the self-heating Mayfair, with its insulated walls and one-way privacy window, makes a cosier permanent home. Drop us a message and we'll help you choose.

Will it stand up to British weather?

They're built for it — weather-treated timber and a sloped roof to shed the rain, raised off the ground to stay dry. Re-treating the timber once or twice a year keeps it weatherproof for years, and a sheltered position out of the prevailing wind helps it (and the cat) stay snug through the wettest months.

What bedding should I use?

Straw, not blankets. Straw traps warm air, shrugs off damp and lets a cat burrow down into it, whereas towels and blankets soak up moisture and can freeze in cold weather. Top it up through winter and replace it if it gets wet or flattened.

Where should I place a stray shelter?

Somewhere quiet and sheltered, away from foot traffic, busy paths and other animals — ideally near where the cat already shelters or feeds. Tuck it against a wall or fence with the doorway facing away from the prevailing wind and rain, on firm, level ground so the raised base does its job.

Can more than one cat use it?

Community cats will often share a shelter, huddling together for warmth. The larger shelters like the Mayfair XL give a bit more room, but if you're caring for several cats or a colony it's worth putting out more than one shelter so there's always a warm, safe spot to go.

What about delivery and guarantee?

Our cat shelters are handmade in Britain and delivered free to the UK mainland on orders over £100. If it's not right you have our 90-day no-quibble returns, and every shelter is covered by a 2-year guarantee — so you can get one set up well before the cold weather arrives.

What People Are Saying...

Wonderful product & great company

It was such a great experience!

I was concerned that it would not be possible for me, an 82yr old lady,no good at DIY. to put it together - but it just needed a Philips screwdriver and it was easy!

They were so helpful with advice and instruction and wow - British made - wonderful - superb bird feeder and cheap!

Both the hutch and run are fantastic

We purchased the 6ft Chartwell Double Rabbit Hutch along with the 6ft Heavy Duty Rabbit Run with Burrow Portal and Tunnel for our two rabbits.

Both the hutch and run are fantastic – excellent quality, very spacious for our bunnies, and easy to clean.

Thanks again, James!

Best hutches around

Best hutches and cat hideouts around I was led to believe when buying flat pack cages that they would all break in a month or so which is normally been the case.

But since using home and roost with them being A British made company everything Is a lot better quality all the panels are solid they are easy to put together but we definitely ordering more from you in the future❤️

Quality product, quality customer service!

We are extremely impressed with the service and products from Home & Roost. We were in urgent need of our new hutch, so upon speaking with customer service.

They arranged to send our hutch on an order separate to the rest of our ordered items, at no extra charge!.

A quality product, with quality customer service.

High quality item with high quality service

Initial issue with delivery date, but this was sorted quickly and professionally. The catio is well made and survived all the storms we’ve had in the recent months - it never moved.

The quality is much higher than others I’ve seen, I would definitely recommend purchasing from them.
Excellent product and excellent service.

All Round Great Company

I ordered the wrong hutch (I wanted a double but ordered the 2 tier) and also without realising I ordered the wrong size vinyl flooring.

The warehouse staff anticipated I had made a mistake with the flooring size and sent the one I needed.

The after sales service was excellent with helping me get the hutch I wanted

Couldn’t fail this company

Their website, delivery, instructions everything was beyond perfect. Note, wood is very strong so you will need a small drill. Can do by screwdriver though not recommended.

Hutch is beautiful and especially the design. Definitely using this company over pets at home from now on, wish I knew of you guys earlier!

Great product and fantastic customer service

Brilliant to find a Made in Britain company. I can be pretty sure that the making processes will do least harm to the environment, help protect our wildlife and countryside, and support local UK businesses.

Something made in China probably fails to meet any ethical standards that we consider vital . Well done Home and Roost. I'll be back!

Solid well-made hutch

The order process was straightforward - initially, the hutch was shown as back-ordered, but it was fulfilled and dispatched earlier than the website said.

Regular updates for the delivery - so I was able to reschedule to a convenient date.

Service and professionalism

Great product and keenly priced, swift dispatch, but let down by the courier, who managed to damage a key component.

A quick email exchange of some photos and Alan and his team had a replacement on its way the same day!!

I cannot fault the service and professionalism of Home & Roost.
